A downloadable game for Windows

Fall towards the sunset in this short, contemplative adventure. Cubic Abyss is a free, minimalist, first person, grapple platformer built in 40 hours by one person.

  • 10 Levels
  • A short, abstract story
  • All in-game visuals are built with unreal default assets (praise be to the default cube)
  • A modifiable movement system
  • Chill vibes
  • Exploration of mortality

Content Warning: Death

Starting mostly as a practice project for a live-tweakable movement system and menu, I decided to flesh out some themes and make it into a full, albeit small, experience.

The movement system features a small suite of tweakables like gravity, game speed, grapple range and infinite jumps to make the experience as easy or as hard as you'd like it to be. All of these are available from the Gameplay Settings menu.

Controls:

  • WASD - Move
  • Mouse - Look
  • Space - Jump
  • RMB - Grapple
  • Shift - Boost

Cubic Abyss does not support gamepad or rebindable controls, mouse and keyboard is required.

This is my first completely solo game, any and all feedback is welcome.

Played a few stages until I had trouble progressing*. The minimalist look to the world definitely fits the name "Cubic Abyss," so good job on that part. General stage layouts remind me of other grapple obstacle course games I've played, so you have that down as well.

Only con for me in this is the slow recharge for the grapple, as it gives a brief moment of panic during most jumps: "Oh, crap, will I make it?! CHARGE already!" Which wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing, but it belies the otherwise chill nature of the game. Unsure if that's intended.

(*Trouble progressing isn't related to the game, but my currently limited mouse movement.)

Hey Skydjinn!! Thanks so much for playing and for your feedback! Could you tell me more about the mouse issue you're experiencing? Also, did you already try lowering the grapple cooldown in the gameplay settings menu? It should let you halve the cooldown but I'd be more than happy to adjust the tuning range!

Huh. Somehow didn't even realize there was a setting for that. After changing that and grapple range I was able to beat the game no problem. Feels a bit like I sullied the intended default style now though. As for the mouse, I physically only have about a hand's width of space to move it.. Not something I can fix right now, heh.

So glad that setting let you complete the game! I've heard that impression from a few players now, I think I'm going to add some presets and a settings randomizer option on the next update to see if that helps reduce the feeling of an "intended experience" being the default and encourage peeps to experiment with those settings.
